Microchipping

MICROCHIPPING

Despite your best efforts, accidents can happen and your pet could go missing. Thousands of animals end up in shelters every year. Unfortunately, many of these animals are never reunited with their families because they can’t be identified. A collar tag is a great way to identify your pet; however, if this were to ever fall off or become unreadable you may never be reunited with your pet. We want you to be able to find your special friend! This is why we recommend microchipping your pet.

What is it?

Microchips are tiny transponders that are about the size of a grain of rice, which can be implanted under your pet’s skin, usually right between the shoulder blades. This is done with a large needle and doesn’t require anesthesia but is usually done at the time of spay or neuter.

How do they work?

Each microchip contains a unique microchip identification number. At the time of microchip placement we will register your pet’s microchip with the microchip company so that it is matched with your contact information. If your pet were ever to be lost, a handheld scanner reads the frequency of this chip and displays the microchip information. Animal shelters, rescues and vet clinics own these scanners and will contact the registry to get your name and phone number.

How do I register my pet and update information?

We use 24PetWatch. Once the microchip is placed we will register the identification number with 24PetWatch and provide you with the registration paperwork. It is very important that you activate and update your contact information through their website if anything changes. We will also provide you with a tag for your pet’s collar with the microchip number and registry phone number.

What if I move?

You need to contact 24PetWatch to update your information; otherwise, the chip will not be helpful.

What are the benefits of microchipping?

  1. Permanent pet identification
  2. Best chance of recovering your pet
  3. Quick and painless procedure
  4. Lasts for your pet’s lifetime
